Front Strut Replacement

Considering replacing my front struts. '06 4x4 with 109k miles. Service manual specifies 351 ft-lbs torque for lower strut bolt. For those that have completed this service, where did you find a torque wrench capable of this torque? I do not know anywhere that "rents" the tool and have only found them online at $500-600 dollars (not worth it to do myself). My largest wrench only goes up to 250 ft-lbs.

I've never seen one, but I'd think we can attach an extension bar that is the length of the torque wrench effectively doubling its length. Then it's good to 500ftlbs??

That would work if somehow attached between the ratchet end and the bolt. Attaching it to the rear would double the load you could apply (with a given effort), but not the torque you could measure (would stil "click" at 250 ft-lbs). Did not miss something, did I?

You can use a 4 to 1 multiplier if you have access to one and use your 250 lb. torque wrench.

You guys are too worried about hitting torque numbers. Long handled 1/2 inch breaker bar and ratchets with 2 foot pipes on each will allow you to apply more then enough torque to adequately tighten the lower bolt/nut. I've done a few of these and never had any issue with the fastener not being tight enough.

Stop sweating the numbers.

I'd be more concerned with finding an adequate strut spring compressor. That's the risky side of this job.

That's the engineering side of me, being concerned with proper stressing of the bolt. I can get it tight, no problem. Actually though, when I installed the levelling kit the instructions said to torque to 225ft-lbs (obviously faulty info), which I did, and have had no know issues. That said, I recently am noticing a rattling noise from the front end when travelling over rough pavement, and have wondered if those bolts are now loose. Have not had time yet to check.

Am concerned about spring compressor. Autozone has them for "rent" but I do not know how good they are. Will find out I suppose.

You may find a shop that will compress the springs for a small fee. You need a real spring compressor this job.
