Front Rotor Replacement

What is fair price range for changing out the front brake rotors only.

I wouldn't pay any more than 1 hour for 2wd, and 2 hours for 4wd but then again, it's so easy that I can do it myself in under 30 minutes.

If you are going to pay someone to do it, I'd recommend going to someplace like Pep Boys or another auto part store chain with an attached service center, that way you will save tons of money by not paying the marked up cost of the rotors that are pretty pricey when you get them at the Dealership or most repair centers like brake and tire repair shops.

2wd rotors run around $30 each at the auto parts store.
4wd rotors $80-100 once you add in the wheel bearings and seals.
Don't forget to factor in the cost of good brake pads (mandatory whenever you put new rotors on) they are around $40-$50.

So total cost for front brake rotors and pads:

2wd approx $120 + labor
4wd approx $250 + labor

Now if money is no object, you can always go to Ford and pay double to triple that for some genuine OEM parts.

I think you have this backwards. The 2WD uses wheel bearings and seals and the 4WD uses rotors that fit onto sealed hubs.

Unless you run into the issue I did with mine. They would not budge, tried soaking with PB Blaster, etc, a bigger hammer and so on. We ended up using a torch and some precision cutting to get them off. In 40 years, I have never ran into this, on any vehicle. The new ones got a coating of Anti- Seize before installation.

if you do it yourself, dont break out the torch, just use the nut and bolt method to pop em off. by all means however do put some anti seize on to keep the new ones from sticking.

When did Ford change from serviceable bearings to the sealed hub in front (2wd)?

They didn't, he just wrote it backwards by mistake. The correction is in the thread if you keep reading.

I believe my '03 2WD has sealed front hubs. In the post I think you are referencing you state that the front hubs have serviceable bearings. The first post in the thread has an '02 in his sig so I'm guessing you were commenting on that year. I would assume the change was '02-'03 model which would correspond to the change in the rear axle.
