I am in need of an air compressor and air tools before I go off to tech school next year. What are the requirements for a air compressor inorder to untighten 90% of nuts and bolts? Gallon size? Brand? Psi? Scfm? What do I need to look for on a air impact wrench?
On an air impact basic thing you wanna look for is on torque and off torque. Id personally say off torque is more important if you are one of those people who believe in properly torquing fasteners (as you should be). Ingersoll Rand makes some pretty good ones.
As for an air compressor... that could be a lot of different things.. especially for someone who is going to a tech school and not really having a permanent place. Ideally a nice big expensive compressor is nice to have as it works well for a lot of applications.
A 20 gallon or so would be pretty good for a 120 outlet and semi decent portability. You cant run it all day without it having to build air but the supply is decent for standard jobs.
A 2 to 5 gallon compressor can be great for portability and its small enough to throw into an apartment closet or a trunk. Thing is, even taking off tires runs the thing out of breath.
There was a discussion a few weeks back with someone looking for an air compressor for his garage. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ompressor.html . Im sure others will add their input also as this can be a pretty big subject.
Thanks for the help, however if Im only running an air ratchet, would a 20-30 gallon tank be plenty? mayby 120 volt 5cfm? It needs to be enough to take off tires and most rusted bolts
A compressor that can generate somewhere around 5 CFM and is belt driven is a nice all purpose size that will run most non-continuous duty air tools without a problem, it may stretch the limits of "portability" however.. it's not something you can carry in one hand.
In all honesty Trojan, I would look into another tech school if they dont even have a shop with a fully functional compressor. Its one thing to need tools for school, and even that should be to a limited degree since you are in a school. But needing to get a compressor for you to work is a little over the top.
Thats just my opinion having been to a vocational school, college that runs 7 shops, and working in multiple shops. None of these places required any students or employees to provide compressors.
Volvo92906 is right.. A school that on such a limited budget that they require "you" to provide an air compressor just might be one step ahead of the bill collectors and closed next Monday when you head to class..
Now as far as hand tools, that's the norm.. You will need them sooner or later as most shops don't supply hand tools unless they are specialized, then they are for everyone in the shop..
