That's the right side inner tie rod that hooks to the steering box pitman arm. The rubber boot is gone and needs replaced, but it does not necessarily mean that joint is bad. Lift both front tires off the ground, putting jack stands or blocks under the axle beams, and then grab one of the tires at 9 o clock and 3 o clock, and while watching that joint, wiggle the tire back and forth. If there is play there, you will see it.

You will need a pickle fork to get that off to replace it, you have to replace most of that arm to fix it. They sell them at the parts store.

Please fill out the User Control Panel info to tell us about you and your truck. That way we can help you easier. For instance, you haven't said whether your truck is 2 or 4wd, but judging by the pic's I'd say 2wd.

The thumping sound may be the radius arm bushing(s). However, my experience is that they thump more on bumps w/o the brakes having been applied, although I guess they could easily thump on turns.

Anyway, the radius arm is the fore/aft piece that connects the front axles to the frame towards the rear. The bushing is at the rear where the arm anchors to the frame, and they are notorious for being pretty much used up at this point. If the thump seems to be under your feet or the passenger's feet then it is probably that bushing.

If the sound is at the wheel it isn't the radius arm bushings. Do Dave's test and look for anything that moves, including at the wheel itself.
