Squeaking when starting

I'll start with my usual disclaimer: I'm a girl.

OK, moving on... I have a '94 F600 that I've only owned for about a month now. Runs phenomenally. Really clean, well-cared for vehicle (that's him, Buck the Truck, in my gravatar). It has recently started to squeak like it has a belt-issue when I start it. Engine was cleaned before I bought it so the belts did look a little dry. Not dry-rotted or cracked - just dry.

A buddy of mine, who is a really good mechanic checked it out and said the belts probably just needed lube. So, I got spray, he applied, I started it a few times and it still squeaks when I start it.

He said usually, if it is a belt issue, the squeaking sort of fades out after a few seconds. But with this, the squeaking stops abruptly after a few seconds. And, when I used it the other day, it had a total of 6 starts. Squeaking seemed to stop by 4th start. But, after sitting for 3 days, squeaking was back when starting.

So, if the lube didn't work. What else could it be?

It could be all sorts of things, but first thing I would try is remove the belts and start it and see if it still does it.

Don't run it for more then 10-20 seconds or so like that, without the water pump turning, it will overheat REAL FAST.

If it doesn't squeek like that, shut it down, let it sit for a bit, and try turning each accessory by hand. The water pump can squeak, or if it has an AC compression, the clutch can do that too.

If that all checks out, it could be a dry bushing in the distributor but let's get these other things checked first before we go there

Awesome. Will do all of the above. My buddy comes over tonight so will run through all of that. We can cross one thing off the list, Buck doesn't have AC.

Thanks!

if you pull the belt off then put a new one on , specially if they looked dry they probably are ! never had much luck using spray on a belt , was temporary fix at best ! my opinion

Hmmm...I counted four belts in there, although I doubt the power steering belt is a culprit so I think I can cross that one off the list. Definitely have none ready to replace once I take one or another off. Will do a little diagnosis tonight and assess replacements at that time. Good advice though.

You could remove one belt at a time and do a start after each one, that could really help narrow it down to what part is the problem.
