i am wrecking out a 79 f100 for the engine/trans and my brother in law is going to use the frame for a body swap as his got hit i noticed the rear perches are almost totaly rusted out below the spring is this a common thing? as i have never seen that before in all the time i have had these trucks he will have to grind/punch out the rivits and reuse his for sure makes me wonder why a drain hole was not drilled out but i think that would help
After reading I'm not sure what is rusted out ? The spring perches are the thick steel pads that are welded to the axles tube & the springs get bolted to them with U bolts. I'm thinking you mean the rear spring hanger ? If so it is very common for them to rust out, especially the north.
I've got rust free, calif. spring hangers sitting here for sale if your brother will be using this truck and needs them. I used to scrap body mount towers, spring hangers, etc. when parting these trucks but after having a bunch of guys on here asking for them I've been taking the time to keep them now.
I had a rotted out spring hangar on my highboy and I couldn't see using 35 year old mounts so I fabricated a new one out of 1/4" plate and some notched out square stock. I'll try to get some pictures up if anyone cares. Oh, we torched out the rivets, but I'd say a grinder would do the job just as well.
sounds good i will keep that in mind every thing on his frame can be used as the whole truck only has 30,000 original miles even the doors have that "new car close sound"
