i went to replace my leaf springs today but i ended up putting everything back together. i had no problem getting the nuts off the bolts that hold the pack to the hangers, but i could not get those bolts to move! they are really seized into the bushings. i fought with them for hours and gave up. what is the best method to do this? i am thinking about just cutting the bolts out next time, which is why i stopped. i want to get all the hardware ready if i do that. my next idea was to heat up the shackles/hangers, but the driver side leaf spring is right next to my front gas tank. i need tips! i did not think those bolts would be an issue. i have been soaking them in wd40 for a week.
You're on the right track.
When the rust starts to scale they just get tighter and tighter in the bushings.
No amount of lubricant is going to dissolve the rust that's putting pressure on them, nor will it smooth out the -now- rough, gripping surface.
Best to get new bolts and bushings, cut the old ones inside the shackle with an .045 disc or a sawzall and drive them out with a punch and a 4lb hammer on the bench.
okay so i guess im not crazy lol. while i was doing this, i realized that the bracket that the rear of the leafsprng sits on was very rusted and thin. what is this part called? the shackle? its a peice between the spring and the hanger at the rear of the truck. where can i get just this? my hangers are fine but that particular bracket is on its way out.
Dorman OE Solutions has them in the aftermarket so any auto parts store should be able to get them from a regional warehouse.
I think you'd be looking at the 722-004, Ford #E0TZ-5776-A

I had to do this today doing my spring hangers. Sawzalled the bolt head and nut out of the shackle on the inside edge then burned then out the bushing with the torch and pushed them out with a punch by hand. I got a full kit for 120 shipped. Two hangers twos shackles all hardware needed in one box... could not get better then that. Had to get two bushings for the spring eyes though do to your issue here...
