Advise PLease" 2004 Excursion Limited

Hello. I am new to the forum and seek advise. I have an 04 Excursion Limited, one owner excellent condition, interior from day 1 always covered, 105,000 miles, paint very good except the front bumper and hood. Here is my problem.

I noticed a very strong mildew smell in the cargo are, after inspection the carpet was soak and wet. pulled it out and the padding under the carpet was soak as well. (I have a new replacement being made). I then got a step ladder and check the roof. I found 5 rusted areas with holes. I brought it to the local autobody shop here and after inspection, he said he could glass it in, but it would only last 1-2 years and would not stand be hind it, he said a new replacement roof was the way to go, he said 3K just for the roof and 3 days labor, plus the paint, and $$$ to paint the bumper and hood. I looked online and see that Salvage yards have the complete roof for $600-1200. I am going to another autobody shop tomorrow. Which direction should I go???, have them patch it and glass it, or purchase a salvage yard replacement and the paint. I love the truck, and want to keep it, I think the engine is good for another 100K. What kind of money do you all think this should cost me for the roof, & Paint???. Thank you,

JC

If it were mine I'd replace the roof.

If you can be sure the replacement roof is rust free? Can you figure out what caused the 5 holes in the old one and avoid that issue in the future?

Worth fixing right IMO.

Oh, and Welcome!

It looks like the holes began on both sides of the luggage rack, two of the holes are where the screws attaches the rack to the roof, two are just forward of the rear hatch hinge.
