The truck has a GVWR of 11,500. With all of the folks and crapola, it weighs 9,200 pounds. The kingpin weight is about 2,100 pounds, so I'm at 11,300. GVWR is good to go.

The GCWR is 23,000. So with a 9,200 pound truck and a 13,700 pound trailer, I'm grossing out at 22,900. It's close, but still still insurable.

I'm trying to figure out how a 12,000 pound trailer will put you over any of the limits, unless it's a bumper pull, which you said it isn't. You're not adding the GVWR and the weight of the trailer are you? Part of the GVWR is the trailer. What am I missing?
I dont see them not covering it for you being over weight i have insurance on my truck and camper

And yes once you hook up to a trailer you have a combined gvw
If what you said was the case my tractor wich is registered for 80,000 but only weighs 20,00 i could pull 100,000lb trailer and be legal but itpulls a trailer that weighs 18,000 empty and is loaded with 40,000 on the average that puts me under my gvw at 78,000

The way I understand it, GVW is the amount of weight that is entirely supported by the truck. The kingpin weight will be supported by the truck so it adds to the GVW. However, if you add the GVW to the trailer weight, you'll be counting the kingpin weight twice since the kingpin weight is part of the trailer.

Perhaps the definitions are different in the tractor/trailer world. Or the more likely scenario is that I am completely out to lunch.

The tongue or kingpin weight is added to the weight of the truck to get the trucks GVW. The entire trailer weight and truck weight is added together to get the GCW. You don't add the tongue weight into that since its part of the total trailer weight (but its supported by the trucks axles instead of the trailer axle). Make sense?
