sputtering and hardly any hp can't do a burnout
i'll read some posts on here regarding empty cats, a bad o2 sensor and hp loss. my plugs are new along with my distributor cap. i forgot my mention that my gas gauge doesn't work and i've taken the rear tank off the truck and am using the front tank. the guage never worked in the front tank, but did in the rear until it stopped sending gas to the engine so i just took the rear tank off not needing two tanks........do i just need a new sending unit in my front tank to fix all these problems? my pap gave me this truck out of the blue on day and it has sentimental value to me and i'd like to keep it in good running order..... the truck only has 85,000 miles on it and has never been wrecked and i've done a transmission flush.......thanks
First off, have you checked for any codes?
Gutting the cat will not cause a driveability problem, however you could have sold the cat and gotten around $40 from a recycler which would have more than covered the cost of a straight pipe.
As far as going into OD at 45 mph, that does not sound unusuial. My 96 goes into OD at about 47 mph when unloaded.
Just a thought. Since you mentioned the removal of the fuel tank, it is possible that some crud in the fuel lines is now restricting fuel flow through the fuel filter. Maybe it is time to replace the filter.
As far as the gas gage not working, I would make sure that every other cause has been eliminated before I would remove the pump assy. I believe the sending unit/pump is sold as one part. Which is somewhat expensive.
Good luck, hope you get her fixed.
Did the truck run fine before you did anything to it?
My OD will come on at 40mph if I'm not pushing on the skinny peddle hard. Comes off at 37mph if I'm gently slowing down.
IIRC a 1995 doesn't have an O2 sensor after the cat, whereas a 1996 does, so no cat shouldn't have wrecked your sensor.
Why do burnouts? They're hard on everything!
as far as driveability, you really should have just cut off your cat and replaced it with a pipe like another member said, or just replaced it with an exhaust sytem from flowmaster or magnaflow that dosent use cats.
it also seems like there is something clogged in the fuel system, i would go for a fuel system clean.
also, my '94 with a 5.8L 351 will go into OD around the speed yours does so yeah its normal.
