If I run out or gas in my f150 it takes a long time for gas to reach the carb and start the engine. The only way possible to get fuel to the engine without burning up my starter it so pour gas down the carb. Is this normal for mechanical fuel pumps or is my pump going bad? Would it be a good Idea to add an electrical pump to prime the fuel lines if for any time I do run out of gas? I should add that sometimes my engine won't rev up but just die out randomly and takes a while to start beck up.
Sounds like you might have either a clogged fuel filter or clogged strainer on the pick up tube in the fuel tank. If you are running your truck so low on fuel that you run out of gas regularly you probably have a good deal of moisture in your fuel tank. If so you should drop the tank, clean it out and replace the strainer on the pick up tube. Keeping you tank full will minimize the amount of moisture buildup in the tank.
I'm defiantly replaceimg the tank within the next couple months along with the sending unit, fuel limes, and fuel filter as well. I'll see if that solves the problem. Thanks for the help.
Mechanical pumps usually either work or don't. If you run it out of gas and after filling the tank and drop a little gas down the carb, that start up and run for a few seconds should be enough to get the new fuel flowing.
Before you add a elec pump I would look into fixing your possible other issues, like maybe a carb rebuild, replacing any inline fuel filters and yes drop the tank and ck the sending unit pick up tube filter.
FYI since you are going thru all the trouble to drop the tank, I'd just put a new sending unit in it.
Is your gas gauge not working at all or is it WAY off, look in here for a walk thru on testing the sending unit and dropping the tank.
To all the other good advice I'd add change out the short segments of rubber line while you are working on it. All of them. If there are any small age cracks they can let air in and reduce pump effectiveness or stop the truck completely.
