If you want to make horsepower with a 351W then you need to improve the breathing
of the engine. This would require very good cylinder heads with 2.02 and 1.60 valves
and a good roller camshaft with good induction and good exhaust. The best deal on
good cylinder heads would be aftermarket Dart, World or RHS cast iron heads. These
can be bought from Summit or Jegs. The induction should be an alumium intake with a
600-650 carb. and you should use long tube headers with free flowing dual exhaust.
The cam doesn,t need to be very wild but have a good broad torque curve. If the
truck happens to have an AOD auto trans then you need to be very careful about
hooking up the TV linkage for the trans. If you don,t have an AOD, then it is very
easy to modify the engine.
Im looking to get between 250-300hp in a perfect world.
The trans is an AOD. so any pitfalls you can help me avoid, the better. This is going to be a daily driver with enough grunt that she can take it to the HS drags on the weekends.........
Stock rebuild with lightning spec cam and gt40 heads should put you at the 280-290 mark. Thumper e7's and a decent cam should put you over the 300hp mark. The '95 lightning made 290 hp stock, your numbers should be easy to hit.
Just don't go too wild on the cam to keep the hp/tq numbers at a useable RPM for a truck.
You whole budget is going to have to be used to beef up the AOD if you are going to drag race with it behind a 351w.
And like someone else said in a earlier post, to make power with a Ford engine the first thing to do is get rid of the factory heads and go with something aftermarket with a adjustable valve train and reasonable flow ratings.
