I'm looking to get a 351w from a junk yard. I'm going to get a good running unit and do a few mods like cam, carb/manifold, and exhaust,
This motor is going to be put in my 64 F100 with a top loader 4 speed.
Basically I wanted to know if there is a certin year motor I should look for. Did some years come with higher compression? Better heads? anything else? I'm looking for something fairly cheap ($500-$700) so doubt I will be able to get a lightning motor.
Also, what would be a good cam for making good power to around 5500 RPM?
I figure I'll run an Edlebrock 650-700 carb with a performed manifold. Also a free flowing exhaust.
I would probably do a head swap later down the road. Maybe GT40 or something.
This truck will be a daily driver when it's not snowing. It's fairly light @ aound 3,600lbs and I won't use it to tow or haul heavy stuff but once in a while. I'm trying to build something that will run fairly quick on a budget.
Go to www.compcams.com look at the XTREME ENERGY line of camshafts, XTREME 4x4, or the DUAL ENERGY line. You want a dual patern cam like the ones suggested. Small block Fords like the extra lift on the exhaust. You will definately see an improvement with a cylinder head change. A pair of World Products Windsor R 180 heads will set you back $939.00 from Summit Racing. The heads are fully assembled and are cast iron. If you get the Windsor R 180 heads it is recommended that you get roller rockers. If you get the heads, you may need new pistons to accomodate the smaller combustion chamber so the compression will be streetable. I happen to like the Weiand Stealth intake manifold. Save your money and build the engine the way you want it the first time. Then after it is on the road save for an exhaust system. Such as headers and new free flowing mufflers. Just my .02 cents.
