On a pickup I don't know that you would really feel the diffrence. I put all new exhaust on my 95 460, X pipe no cats and Flowmasters and I can tell the diffrence by adding the whole system but it's not like all of a sudden I have all this new power to play with. The X pipe balances better than the H but both are good. I can tell you that the x pipe makes things sound really cool.
If your motor is mild then 2.5 is plenty. Actually 2.5 is plenty anyway but if it is a built motor then I would spring for 3". that's if it's a big block, if you have a 302 or 351 the 2.5". What motor are you using?
I've got a 352 at the moment but I've got plans for a highly built 390. hoping for 500+ horse. Any idea what kind of decibal level dual 3 inch 40 series flowmasters would make? we've got a noise ordinance in my town, $100 ticket, a bit outrageous if you ask me, after all, "loud pipes save lives!!"
If you looking to push 500 ponies the 3 in is definately what you want. Also, if your ordinance is STRICT, then the 40's may not be what you want. Though I think you'd be ok. My 416 is around 425hp with headers, 3 in pipe and FM 40's with 4 in tips dumped right behind the cab and it will literally shake things as you drive by and it is very cool. If you put a simliar system on your 500horse 390 it would sound amazing. The Fe's are good sounding motors. I'm assuming this isn't going to be your daily driver, so i would say go for it and just baby it in town to keep the boys in blue off your back. Go with good headers and not cheapies, x or h pipe, 3 in pipe with 40's and you will be glad you did.
definitely not a daily driver. as much as I'd like to I couldn't afford the gas. I live in a rural area outside of town, so I'd probably be alright as I can avoid the areas in town where I'm likely to have problems. Thanks.
Suggest you check out www.headerdesign.com before you do anything. I am sure you will learn a lot as I did. Be sure to register so you can run their header design and CFM calculator programs. You are going to be surprised. The administrator/designer of this site has his Phd. and a wealth of experience. He is not a back yard welder who claims to be a header/exhaust system expert. Check it out.
i am putting exhaust on my truck- put the headers on today. It is a 77' with a 460 swapped into it. 535hp (i got the tech sheet from ford, i didnt build this motor it would of cost me alot more so i bought one of ford motorsport's bracket race engines) i am putting a 3" x-pipe on it i had made. I will let you know what it sounds like when it gets done. I wont be able to tell exactly how much more power i get from the x because i am going from manifolds,2.5" pipe, and glasspacks TO-headers, x-pipe, magnum bullets, and nice big 3" pipe. it is too much of a difference to tell what one thing is doing
