Okay so i was at the junkyard yesterday and was wondering if the ford 8.8 gears were swapable i know the explorers some models came with a 3.73 trutrack limited slip diff, and i was just wondering if those were a direct fit for my pickup i just want my truck geared a lil higher then the 3.08 gears open diff i have.
Another question how do the axles come out? I had a tuff time taking both off when i was at the junkyard.
Where did you get the information that Explorers came with Detroit trutrack differentials?
I have a 1996 Explorer AWD V8 with 3.73 gears that I bought new and I think it has the
Ford clutch type limited slip in the rear.

well thats exactly what i mean i just have a habit of saying trutrac for LSD just a habit i guess lol... well your truck has the gears i want!
i jusst want know if anyone has "beefed" these rear end i know the explorer and every truck except the ranger till 99 i believe come with 31 splines... just dont know if there kinda like a bolt on thing.
Need to have the correct spacing between the ring gear and the pinion gear. This is critical to longevity. Each housing is slightly different, so you can't just use the same shims. Gear swaps are involved, but if you pay attention and have some skill you can do it. Don't rush it, and do it in a garage.
To take the axles out, remove the little bolt on the carrier that has a 5/16" head on it, then slide the pin out that was held in by that bolt. Next, push inward on the outer end of the axle shaft, then remove the C-clip back inside the differential. The C-clip is on the inner end of the axle shaft. Then the shaft slides out. Repeat for the opposite side. Careful not to drop the side gears with the shafts out.
To remove the differential, just remove the 4 main bearing cap bolts and carefully pull the diff out, its heavy so don't drop it.
Pinion gears and ring gears are matched pairs, so don't interchange ring and pinions among sets. And I don't mean matched just in ratios.
No problem. My dad was a Ford mechanic for a loong time and has always been able to tell me how to do anything on these trucks, or any truck really. I know good info can be hard to come by (especially for free), so I try to share what he's taught me.
