Just wondering if someone could give me a rough estimate on the price of swapping gears in my truck. I have an 85 f150 4x4, which has the 8.8 rearend, 3.08 gears and 33 in. tires. I'd like to go to 4.10's, and put a limited slip in the rear. I don't know much about limited slips or lockers, but I'll be driving mostly paved roads so nothing too crazy. I'll have my buddy install them, but I'm just curious what a shop would charge so I can get an idea of what to offer him. Thanks
The price to have a professional install new gears in both axles would be $1000-1200 including the gears and everything except for your limited slip/locker of choice. This is basically the average. Some places will be more, some will be alot less. It is usually best to have someone do this that knows what he/she is doing as it can come back to haunt you if done improperly.
Thanks for the reply. Any idea what just the gears would cost, no labor? Am I wrong thinking I can get a limited slip for around $300.00? I agree, I won't let anyone touch it that isn't qualified. I trust this guy, he's done it many times. Thanks again
I just did mine and it cost 190 for the rear gears, 80 for an install kit, and 188 for the front which includes the install kit. Price for the LS depends on the unit, but get a good aftermarket one the ford unit probably won't handle it. Also, you'll need a new carrier for the front axle, so think about getting a limited slip or locker (best to have a selectable locker) in the front.
Thanks guys, looks like I'll have to save up longer than I thought. How bad would it ride on the streets with a limited slip up front? I'd like a selectable locker, but I don't think thats in my budget. Thanks again
Since you drive mostly on roads, you don't need anything up front, run it open (w/o locker or lim. slip). Get a limited slip in the back. Putting anything up front is a big waste of money in your situation. Most mild trails don't need a locked/limited slip front either.
I think your best bet, is go to the junk yard, and find a 70's or 80's F-150 9" with 4.10's and a limited slip, grab that(shouldn't be over $150) and bolt it in.
The find a 80's or 90's F-150 with 4.10's up front, and buy the 3rd member from the frontend. Then you can just bolt it into your truck, and not have to deal with setting up any gears, and it will be alot cheaper.
Originally posted by JeremyH Hummm,,,,,,,,I have been looking for a new axle for the jeep......how wide are those 9's usually? What is the bolt pattern?
same width as the 8.8, what ever that is, I think about 66" drum to drum. Botl pattern is the same 5x5.5
It would make a good swap if your going to full width axles, on a CJ. But if you have a YJ or TJ, I would get a exploder 8.8. Same size 31 spline shafts, but jeep width, and it has the smaller 5x4.5 bolt pattern.
Yeah......I knew about the sploder 8.8 I was considering that......it is about a half an inch narrower than stock TJ axles.....Only problem is I was trying to get away from c-clip axles.
I know that the 9 hangs low as hell and the pinion is really low too....but damn those things are beefy! 9's have available 35 spline shafts too!
I thought about checking around my local salvage yards for a rear end but I figured they'd want an arm and a leg for it. I'd be all for it if I could score one for around $150.00, problem is all the salvage yards around here are so overpriced it's unreal. Last week I needed a front hub, no rotor, no lockout just the 1 hub, and they wanted $75.00. I thought that was a little steep. Thanks for the advice, I'll look into it.
