Exploratory wiring in engine bay

I went to clean-up the ignition coil wiring on my 1987 F-150 w/4.9 I6.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
I notice the engine is grey in color making me think it is either a crate replacement or a rebuild.<o></o>
Here's what puzzles me though, the wires that feed the ignition coil have been reworked...there are three wires are combined in one crimp connector and connect to a green wire that goes to the coil. One white wire is connected separately to the coil. <o></o>
The engine starts right up, and seems to run OK, I just wonder if it is right.<o></o>
Thanks for your comments...<o></o>

DO you have a tachometer. Maybe someone tied one in previously. Thats the only thing I can think of off hand.

Have you traced the wires to see where they go? Do they go into a loom? Like said above, could have been from a previously installed aftermarket tach.

wires

The wires appear to go into the factory harness. There is a four wire connector between the coil and the factory harness. There is no factory tach. I just bought the 1987 Ford factory wiring and vacuum manual from e-bay (sorry if I bid against you) and will trace the schematic.

Gray is the factory color in 1987, as explained here:

Just because they started painting motors Gray in 1983 does not mean the plant used up all their engines that were painted blue by that date.

And with something this old, it could have been swapped or painted as well.

1985 factory built engines were gray.

Could a brand new 1982 built blue engine find it's way into a 1985? You bet! It depended on the calibration code and how many were built in 1982, and how many were needed in 1982.

KEDWINH, are you the one that has the canadian built 1985 engine; with the non-catalyst, able to use leaded fuel model, correct? This could explain why the engine is blue if it is you. If the truck still has the calibration sticker on the valve cover, under the calibration code it will have letters and numbers. A through M for the month. The year in two sets of numbers like 80 81 82 etc... and numbers 1 2 3 in one line and 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 in the other for the day . The sticker will be hole punched over the appropriate number or letter when the engine was first built.
