93 E350 Rear End

New to site looks great.
I just came across a deal on a 93 E350 motorhome for dirt cheap. It has a whine at 50 mph and believe its the rear end. The whine is under throttle not coast. There is a tag on the axle housing that reads
4:10 a diamond shape 2US AC
760553
Is this a Dana 60? Looks like a Dana.
Thanks, appreicate any input

There is a good door sticker decoder here but no tag decoder.
If the oil fill/level bung is on the diff nose housing then it would be a Ford Sterling 10.25 but if on the rear diff cover then Dana, I would think.

That will be a Dana 70.

My 1987 E350 motorhome also has a rear end whine @ 45mph (starts whining at 43mph and stops at 46mph, but is the loudest at 45mph.

The differential has to much backlash. When I put mine in gear, sometimes I hear a very loud metal CLANG or especially when I go from Drive to Reverse, or vice versa.

Nothing to to bad, mine has been whining like that for 6-7 years. I will re-adjust backlash when I get the chance to, cause it is slowly getting worst.

You'll have to measure the backlash and order new shims from Ford to get the backlash back into spec.

should be a 10.25 unless its a dual rear than it would be a dana 80, is it low on oil?

It's a Dana 70 with either a 9.75" or 10.50" ring gear. Limited Slip was optional.

This is an E350, not an F350. There is no Sterling 10.25 or Dana 80 listed for any Econoline in Ford truck parts catalogs.

All vans have/had/still has Dana rear axles on the 1 tons or any one van with a full floater axle.

Not sure about the 3/4 ton ones with those silly semi floaters.

Of course I'm sure, because...I have Ford parts catalogs...and 35 years of Ford parts experience.

Take a look-see in the 1973/79, 1980/89 & 1990/ Ford Light Truck Parts Catalogs. Text, Section 40: Rear Axle Application Charts.

How many Sterlings or Dana 80's do you see listed for E350's? There are none, because none were ever installed.

All 1975/2011 E250's use Dana 60's, all 1975/2011 E350's use Dana 70's. And all E250/350's have 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle.

Econolines do not have metric wheels like 1999 and newer F250/350's do.

A bit of a thread-jack here, but NumberDummy seems to know his stuff so I thought I'd ask...

I own a 05 E350, EB, 6.8L, and I'm wondering about the axles/rear end in my vehicle. I understand it's a Dana 70 w/3.73 gears and I'm looking to install a Tru-Trac LSD (locker? whichever you prefer to describe a Tru-Trac ). Any idea what my axle spline count is? It's a "semi-floater" as well- no external axle bolts.

It'd be nice to know if I gotta budget for axles and such before being elbow-deep in the project.

In a thread resurrection, my 98 e350 V10 just lunched it's differential. Sounds like a Sterling unit. Any best way to tackle it? Rebuild the bears, go used r/r? Sell it whole? Find the nearest cliff?

As noted by ND above it is a Dana 70, not a Sterling.

With all due respect, I wish you were right.

Because if you were, I wouldn't be looking years for a D70 for my 1995 E350.

The majority of E350's in and past my era, had D60's .. usually semi float

And if you did have a D70 in a E350, it was more likely a D70U.
D70U is a D60 bearing kit with a different ID on the pinion head bearing bore, other than that, they are identical. When you get into the 70B, you get the larger pinion head bearing. And then when you get a 70HD, you get the larger pinion head bearing and the Dana 80 sized carrier bearings. There are five D70's

I'm having a heck of a time finding a SRW d70HD as car-parts.com wont search them.

From what I'm told they were used in the SRW cutaway van.

Was wondering what you did to fix it?

I was wondering what you did to fix the whine and the clunking? I have an 93 e350 xl shuttle bus and kind is doing the same thing as well now it's having a problem going into reverse. Any input from anyone?
