hi guys, i usually hang in the 73-79 forum, but i just aquired an 83 f-350 4x4 from my wifes uncle and was wondering what kind of rear end it had. i'm pretty sure that it's not a dana 60 so i would like to know wwhat it is...thanks for the help
It would be either a Dana/ Spicer 60, 61 or 70. You would have to give us the xxxxxx-x #'s off the metal tag affixed to the rear differential cover.
Remove the tag and clean it on a wire wheel to make it legible.
The front differential will be a Dana/ Spicer 50 IFS
Also, it would not be a sterling. Ford did not start using them until 85.5

Ford manual doesn't say. Look at the lower rear passenger side of differential housing on web just below where axle tube (long) is attached. Dana model (60, 61, or 70) should be cast or stamped on that web (this info. from LMC Truck catalog).
If you look at the axle from the front side, a Dana 70 will look like a hershey's kiss turned on it's side (this description came from a recent post on this forum, forgot their name but, that's about what it looks like) If you look the centersection over you will usually find a 70 marked in the casting.
A Dana 61 usually has a "re enforcement webbing" (kind of a trussing) of the centersection for strength and sometimes has a 61 cast into it.
A Dana 60 lacks the structural webbing and sometimes has a 60 cast into it.
A 61 is stronger then a 60 with 70's being the strongest.
Some 60 cases were machined out and had 61 gears installed in them by Dana / Spicer and dubbed 61's.
If you were to remove the rear cover and give us the #'s off the ring gear we could tell you what rear it has.
60's 61's and 70's all came in both semi and full float versions!
Usually F350's have the 61 or the 70.

My book shows a C2 as
Code...........Man........Size......GVW.........Ge ar Ratio......Type
C2.............Dana 61...............6250..........4.10............ Limited Slip
*Note: C2 (6250 & 6340 ratings)
*Note: C2 was used as a code in 1982 for a 3.0 Dana 60

It's a book, I myself have been compiling for over 6 years. It's from Haynes, Chilton, Mitchel manuals combined with information from F.T.E, other places on the net and what I have seen and worked on. If your looking for something specific send me a message I may have it. I am always trying to find more info to complete my info. I know there is still some gaps, But I won't know untill I come across it.
<DANA><Dana > is usualy stamped on the back cover on the upper left. Most time the model Dana is on the right. Some times it's stuck under the <Dana >
