Greetings all, I am new to the forum after seeing that this was a very helpful community of Ford owners. I was wondering if I could get some advice with my power steering system. I have a leak, and am unsure of how to pinpoint it. I purchased the one owner from my uncle a couple of years ago and have had very few problems. It looks like there is fluid around the front of the pump behind the bracket. I also have seen fluid on the bottom of the gear box. I figure I should start with the pump and go from there. Looking at rebuild kits, and unsure of where to go with that. Any help, ideas etc. would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!
I had a leak like this in that area, turned out to be the fitting connections. I loosened rotated slightly, slightly tightened, slightly loosened, and then tightened again to specs The leak stopped. Not sure this is the issue you have but this worked for me, and it might be something to consider if you replace the pump.
Thanks! I will definitely check my fittings and look at getting those kits. Hopefully I can get those at a parts store around town. Appreciate it! I will keep you all updated! Thanks again!
Okay,here's an update:
Pump is leaking slightly I think but nothing compared to the gear. Taken off, cleaned tightened and put back on.
I removed the pitman arm from the sector shaft, and purchased a "pitman arm seal kit" from a local store. I removed the snap ring holding the seals in around the shaft. I am now at a road block. I cant get the seal out of the steering gear. I tried turning the wheel with the engine on hoping that the seal would come out, but to no avail. I broke two of my picks trying to pry it out. Would Like to know if I am going the right direction before I mess something up. Any help is greatly appreciated!
There are a couple of ways to try to get the seal out. I've used both with success.
First, take a SHARP center punch and collapse the seal in a couple of places, you should then be able to pry the seal out with a thin screw driver or pic.
The second is to take a couple of sheetmetal screws and screw the into the seal 180 degrees apart and pry the seal out that way.
Good luck.
Well, I thought I should give you all an update. I replaced the sector shaft seal on my steering gear and my power-steering pump. Both were leaking. This required much patience and time. My wife even had to come out and help me finish it out! It was a good experience. The leaks appear to be fixed! Thanks for all of the help guys! I appreciate it so much. The old 76 is a daily driver yet again.
Hey, you could have looked at my pictures on my profile I put an album up with my pictures because I was not sure about how to go about it. Only problem is I put them up back wards.
