Draining Fuel Tanks

I need to drain the fuel from the front and rear tanks of my 92 F-250 - I have heard that it is not possible to siphon from the cap opening. Is there a way to remove the gas without driving the truck around or making a big mess? Is it possible to disconnect the fuel filter, put the fuel line into a gas can and turn on the ignition and let the pumps do the work?

Its possible but you do the risk of burning your pumps up by sucking out all the fuel and pulling in air. I'd do that and get most out and then deal with a little extra weight from the fuel left over.

Yes, I do that when I need to drain a tank of bad gas. As long as the fuel pump is runable and is able to pump the crud out, it works really good.

What I do is find the fuel pump relay and jumper it so the pumps will come on without running the engine. And disconect the fuel line BEFORE the filter(it could be plugged up and won't alow fuel to flow) and run it into a gas can. When the 1st tank is empty just switch the fuel tank selector switch on the dash and run the other tank out.

The last time I pumped a 19 gal tank down took about 10 to 15 mins to empty. Now if the fuel pumps are not able to pump of the fuel, your going to have to probly drop the tanks or what I do and others will frown apon, is pull the bed off or jack up the driver's side of the bed enough off the frame so you can remove the fuel pump/sending unit from the tank and siphon it out that way.

You can try a hard ice maker line(1/4" dia) and snake it into the tank from the filler. But thats going to take a weekend to drain!

I drained my tanks using a marine outboard motor fuel line with a good squeeze ball in the middle (having a good, operating one way valve) . They were drained into some jerry jugs by siphoning action, through the little hole in the gas cap tank fills.

Those are sure handy things to have! I use one all the time, but now it has a bad check valve and its hard to prime up. I even used mine for draining my front diff once, took lots of squeezing that bulb but it drained it out.

I did try on my trucks few times but couldn't get the hose past what ever was stopping it. Had used the 1/4" hard line for ice makers and got down to the tank's bottom.

Yes very handy, I put an in-line filter on mine right ahead of the ball, to protect the one way valve.

Take a valve stem core removal tool and remove the under hood pressure check schrader valve core. Hook on a piece of tubing and turn the key to run, not start. Easy peasy.
