Iam looking at buying a ford f250 but dont know if i should get the diesel or the v10. I work in construction and never go more then 10 miles from home and do alot of running around in town dropping off and picking kids up at school. Iam just afraid those short miles would kill the diesel.I will be towing a 10000lb dump trailer twice a month. The years iam looking at are the 99 thru 03 so any feedback would be a big heip in my dicission. THANKS.
most likely the V-10 would be best overall for your purposes.
I am/was in the same boat, but I went ahead and bought the PSD. I am just going to be extremely pro-active on the maintenance and occasionally get some throttle to clean her out.
not to mention a V-10 would be cheaper, and easier to find fuel for. It is a major PITA to find diesel out here where I live. I spent 1 hour the other night trying to find a damn station that carried it
Did not know that diesel had short trip problems....
I bought a 2000 F250 in Feb of this year. 124K miles then and 128K miles now. 6.8L V10. Its a 11 year old truck, I put new rotors, pads, and caliper brackets on it. It needed 2 new coils, so I replaced them all. Seems to be that a common 5.4/6.8 failure is the coils.
I am certain I don't have the power of a 7.3L PSD, but the truck is not without power.
Also when I looked for trucks I found that in the 99-04 range, <150Kmiles, Crew Cab is +$2K, 4x4 is +$1K, 8ft Long bed is +$500 and diesel is +$2K. Compared to a similar truck without those options.
Other than the Diesel trucks costing more, the other negative is the engine compartment. I fix 99% of the stuff on my vehicles, and the PSD engine looks like a Honda Civic nightmare. I also worried about cold weather starts... but not sure if that' an issue or not.
Thanks for your feedback on my post. THe only reason iam leaning towards the psd is because i hear it gets better mpgs on the freeway and I drive to utah every summer.
I had a 99 7.3 6spd crew cab dually for 5 years. I live 1 Mile from my shop so back and forth to work I totaled a whopping 10 miles a week, with the running to the store or occasional trip to Disney I would use about 1 tank a month. I used it to pull my 8000 lb camper and carry my 1000 lb motorcycle when we went on trips, and other than normal routine maintenance I never had an issue, One of the most dependable vehicles Ive had.
It had a 4" straight pipe from the turbo back so no muffler to plug up. Great truck, I would still have her if she were automatic. I now have an 09 v10 crew cab dually, Differences are, Gas=smooth idle and quiet engine, Lots of power actually close to the 7.3 a little less but not by a lot, the v10 pulled the camper and hauled the bike to Tennessee no problems, she will pass anything but a gas station. and got any where from a low 6.5 to a high 9 mpg. the 7.3 averaged about 10 to 13 when we had her.
Diesel was noisy price of fuel was higher but better MPG's and a bit more power.
If you get diesel get 7.3 . If you get gas V10.
From what your describing in needs either one would do fine, there is no problem with short trips in a diesel, but you missed 1 why not look at a 5.4? they are a great engine in a SD as long as your not drag racing it may fit your needs perfectly and can be bought for considerably less coin and will get a consistent 12-13 mpg, they actually make better torque and horsepower than the 460 it replaced! Just my .02
