V10 or Powerstroke???

ok gentlemen im in the market for a high mileaged 99-00 4x4 F250. And i was wondering which engine has the best duriabilty? Because well from my belief any gas engine that has over 150k miles on it is on its way out if it hasnt already been rebuilt. But then again i had a bad really experience with a PSD at work this summer that had lesss than 100k on it. So i was just wondering if someone can list the ups and downs of both of these motors when they get some miles on them?

PSD if you like reliabilty, fuel economy and resale.

V-10 if you like buying gas, rebuilding motors and giving trucks away for nothing.

Both great motors though...

Careful

Let's not start the flame fest!

Both engines have their good and bad points. Reliability on both depends on the previous owners use and maintenenace habits. No engine will last if it has been abused or poorly maintained.

The choice lies in what you intend to use the vehicle for. Are you using it as a DD with occasional heavy towing, go with a V10. Do you use it commercially or constant towing, get the PSD.

Give it a rest Customz, I think were all tired of the continuous debate and as BFR said lets not get this thread shut down because of another flame fest, if thats you're porogitive move down to the the Diesel Envy thread!!!

Seventh Texas - your really the only one that can make that decision, high mileage right away bends the table towards the diesel but thats not because the V10 has poor reliability as a well cared for V10 should go 200k, on the other hand a well cared for PSD may go 250-300k. again its hard to judge how its been maintained for last 100k or so miles, either one could crap out long before either of those numbers if abused. It sould be nice to know what your planning on using it for. Lots of heavy towing and lots of miles per year would have me sending you to the PSD, occasional towing or less than say 10-12k miles per year would tell me you should maybe be looking for a V10, on the other hand you can probably buy a year newer V10 with 30,000-50,000 less miles for the same price as a PSD with 30-50k more miles and probably an older truck so it kinda of a catch 22. the diesel will be cost more to maintain but will yeild you beter economy, the gasser currently has cheaper fuel and quite a bit less maintenance. again it really comes down to what your using it for as both are great engines but each has a place where it is better suited than the other. a little more info would really help.

I can only speak of what I know and I have a v10 with 275000 miles on it now and it has been well taken care of and no problems. Does not burn oil or leak any as well. I have friends with the psd and they have all been in the shop for different things. They are still running but the cost of maintenance for me is not really worth it. If you calculate the added cost of buying a diesel and the maintenance even with better fuel economy I can never make the numbers come out. You will make a little up on the resale, but that is all a gamble as well as far as I can tell. Anyway I would not be afraid to buy either one with high mileage as long as it has been well cared for.

well me still being in high school im going to use it as a daily driver, but i'll either be towing a gooseneck horse trailer or making 300 mile trips in it on the weekends. But do to the reason i cant throw a rock without hitting a supercrew PSD down here in "tejas" im kinda leaning towards the Powerstroke and see what i can find. I like the easy towing, half decent mileage and also do to the reason i'll be going to college in about a year i like the resale side of things too. As for the more up keep thats no problem, if i dont know what im doing im sure i have a family member that does. P.S. the one and Powerstroke only i've seen go down was only pulling about 40k lbs. of equipment on it and had something close to 100k miles of pulling just like that, so i see what you all are talking about the abuse part. So now for me to find a Texas PSD driven by a about 70 year old grandma. Thanks guys.....

Exclamation Some Hard Numbers

So I got to thinking. Everybody likes to play the mine is bigger than yours game, but who has provided a side by side comparison on some fairly accurate numbers. I try to be fairly unbiased and I fully believe in the to each his own principle.

So I did some numbers and here is what I got. Take it any way you want, these are what I came up with. Come up with your own if you like.

Nicely done, Ranger.

seventhtexas, if you go back and search past threads for V10 vs 6.0, etc... you'll find numerous threads that spanned page after page of debate on the subject, that will provide you with enough reading to last a few days.

Great comparison table, BFR! I couldn't have done it better myself! The PSD is a great motor. If you can stand (Or even LOVE) the sound of a diesel, buy one. It would be a great move. The resale value, itself is enough for me to make the decission to buy a PSD. I only drive about 35000 miles a year. But, I change vehicles about 3 times a year. Since the "Employee Discount" deal is over, I have already made money on my purchase. (I paid $35,000 out the door for my New 2005 PSD CC 4x4 F-250, and they are selling, USED for $40K.) I don't think anyone can dispute the diff. in resale value between a PSD and a V10. (Putting flame suit on...)

No need for flame brother, that's why I tried to put up some numbers.

Hey, I'm a V10 guy, but numbers don't lie. If you are the type of person that doesn't keep a vehicle to 100K, the PSD wouldn't make sense. If you are the type of person that keeps a vehicle until it dies or goes high mileage, then the PSD will pay for itself and then some.

I'm not a die hard, brand loyal, fuel loyal junkie; I buy what suits ME at the time and gives ME the best value and convienience for what I do. For me the V10 does exactly what I want and it does it very well. For others the PSD may be the way to go. It's your truck, it's your money, until that changes I don't see what the all the huff and puff is about.

Buy what you need and what gets the job done for you.

No, no, no, you guys got it all wrong. It was us evil V10 driving guys. We lobbied the oil companies to raise diesel prices so you guys wouldn't be able to gloat about your MPG.

We'll show you.

nice table you made there.

but a few things missing remeber the diesel needs new fuel filters every 15k which gets pricy. also the v-10 is now a 600.00 option.

6.0 fuel filter is 77.99

the 5.4 and v10 fuel fitler is 10.99

the gas engine only needs them every 30k

so it is 33.00 in fuel filters for every 90k on the gas engine

and 470.00 for the same 90k big difference.

the prices are wix filters from www.napaonline.com

also the diesel uses a special air filter which is also almost 80.00
