My new Bronco and first car. 1990 Ford Bronco, 351w, 129,000 miles.
Plans are 33's on 4in lift, New doors and quarters before winter, plus floor patches and undercoating. As far as performance; Headers and I don't really know what else Performance wise, open to all suggestions. I want an upgrade to the stock air intake. I'm 18 and do most of the work myself. I'm open to any advice and suggestions You guys can give. Progress will be slow as this is my Daily driver.
get some shorty headers, have exhaust shop make you a mandrel bent 2.5" y pipe keeping o2 sensor bung in same releative location, hi flow cat converter and 3" exhaust tucked up nice with your choice of muffler, then run out stock location or there abouts. do not go strait back with exhaust otherwise it will get sucked into the cab.
keep the stock intake the way it is. it actually performs very very well. just get a drop in K&N filter or just run paper filters with regular changes is fine. Run motorcraft copper plugs, get some ford 9mm plug wires and a good msd cap/rotor. Keep the ford coil, no reason to run anything else.
service the front/rear diffs and service the tranny. and you should be all set.
You can fit long tube headers on, but then you have to fab up a Y-pipe, or have a shop make one. They do wake up the motor and make it sound nice tho. Look into this thread for some pics of a LT Header install:
You're gonna put new quarters on, and not just new wheel arch panels? Panels are super cheap, like $40 compared to quarters at $200+. If you are good with a welder, or know someone, panels are a cheaper and just as effective route, unless the quarters are rusted all over.
Nice find. I wanted to put one back on my truck as the previous owner lost it. But I plan on a lift and big tires. So I'm going to get a bumper with a spare tire carrier.
Be careful with those, the mounting points are not the strongest and it if pops loose it could swing back and dent in your freshly patched quarter.
rust on the floorboard of a Ford truck? unheard of! heh, I could see the ground while driving in my 78, it just adds character.. put edge guards around the biggest hole in the floor so it doesn't look like rust caused it and you can use it to throw trash into.
Seriously though, replace the timing chain if you want more power out of it.. they stretch and retard cam to crank timing, it really hurts performance (and your engine). I replaced every sensor on my truck, all new exhaust, cleaned everything, rebuilt my injectors with only marginal increases in performance. When I put the chain in it I felt like I had just dropped in a brand new mildly built 351.
Bumped me up like 7hg vacuum too which improved soo many other things in the truck like my brake pedal feel.
Also, get your PCV valve changed. My engine was sooo full of sludge when I got it, PCV valve was clogged, been doing oil changes every 500 miles and it's finally getting clean, but don't play around here.
Necessities first.. if you're happy with the way it runs, then get your headers.. make sure your motor is 100% first or else you're just wasting money. Not saying this to be a jerk, saying this from experience.
