Hi, I was driving this morning and out of nowhere, the engine started to emit a loud, sharp and repetitive sound. The sound is related to how much I press on the gas. It sounds very much like something that is muffler related, but when I opened the hood, it sounded like it was coming from the top of the engine. I am bringing it my mechanic first thing tomorrow, but I was planning on using it for vacation on Tuesday. If it does sound like a big thing, I will have to make alternate plans. Thanks as always.
Do you have the V10? Does it drive with a miss? If so, it could be a spark plug has popped out.
Thanks. It is a V10. I do hear it at the same time in the cycle (perhaps once every 10 cycles). Maybe that is it. I hope it is that simple. Thanks so much.
If it did pop out, the temporary fix is to install a helicoil, since the threads are now likely gone. Also be sure to check the torque on the remaining plugs. If not properly torqued when installed, they can slowly loosen up, then pop out, messing up the threads on the head.
Hi, I just checked and that is what it was. I am hoping my mechanic can do me a favor and fix it tomorrow. If the threads are gone, I assume that might make this a bigger job than just popping in another plug?
Other than the previous owner not setting the proper torque, what else might cause this?
Thanks again.
I believe 90% of it is caused by someone failing to tighten one when changing plugs. Don't drive it, you have a relatively big job to do to restore the threads. With 10 plugs you need to be focused 100% when changing plugs.
