Loud "howl" from engine

2000 Navigator:
When at a stop light or idling, every once in a while, maybe a few times in a week, i hear a loud "howl" like noise coming from the engine. it goes away the moment i give it gas and doesn't come back for a couple days. any ideas? thanks

Noises are always a bit difficult to diagnose online since people use different descriptions for same sounds.

Anyway... Could the "howl" you mention maybe also be described as "whine"? If so, I would suggest a slipping serpentine belt.

i agree with the difficulty in describing the noises on here. i don't believe it is a whine sound. imagine a train doing the typical choo choo, then that long chooooooo at the end. it is similar to that and as soon as you apply any amount of gas, it clears and will not come back for a few days.

My wife has been going through the same issue. First they thought it might be the coil, replaced coil and gave tune up. Next they thought maybe tranny was the problem since vehicle was stalling when in drive or reverse only. Rebuilt tranny and still having problem. I will see what happens this week. It does not always stall. No codes have been found.

I have posted that I had a whistle coming from the engine---using a smoke machine we found out it was a poorly fitting air cleaner---
Fram to be exact

also the idler pulley bearing can be bad --- causing unusual noises---

Just some ideas that are cheap and easy to check out

Hope this helps you

It could be the fan clutch engaging. You won't notice it while driving but you will when it is idling.

It's probably doing what Ford calls "hooting" or what Contour owners lovingly call "moosing".

It's due to an air resonance in the intake tract, usually at idle, when the IAC valve is in certain positions.

Are you doing the work yourself? I have same problem even after all this work I had done in the last month. I am trying to find the part # so I can pick one up and do the work myself. I located the problem, the hose is pretty much worn out and vacuums into itself.
