Need opinions

Maybe im **** or just something but here in michigan a truck body is temporary, so on my 99 powerstroke, which has stage 1 or 2 cancer under the cab, I started to build 1/8" carbon steel pans to cover the bottom of the cab to keep off the salt and mud. It runs from just behind the front inner fender to the back of the cab, totaly enclosed to the frame. Once i get the fit just right i figure ill kill the rust that i can and then under coat it and put on my pans. Anybody else do something like this? If this seems like a good idea, the box is next!

I'm a South Texas boy, so snow and salt on the roads is foreign to me. However, you mentioned building it out of carbon steel...won't that rust too?

I don't know what Stage 1 or 2 rust means as far as "how advanced" it is. But I would think that if you could somehow kill the existing rust, then put a spray-on coating of some kind to seal the entire undercarriage, that would be a lot less work and cheaper. Don't know if the addition of the pans would help or not.

There's my two pennies...and I'm sure you can make change from it, since I've never had to deal with that.

Tailgate is exactly right. Rust is the oxidization of metal. The only way for something to oxidize is to expose it to air. Take away the air and you cant have rust.
I would do what Tailgate said and rid yourself as best as possible of the rust and then seal it up with couple coats of paint or rocker guard.

If I had my dream come true I'd rhino line the underneath of mine! lol

Another couple of pennies for you.

I had the metal laying around, ideally i would have used 316SS, but id rather have this metal rust than my cab! Im just starting to get a few holes and trying to stop it is dang near impossible. POR 15 helps, but with the spray and stones from the tires eventually you get chips exposing the metal. One thing ive noticed already is that its quieter, not as much road noise and rocks from the tires aren't smacking the floor!

2 More pennies from a fellow Michigander... The same thing the other two guys said...lol. 1/8'' steel is overkill!! If you do that to the whole underside of your truck you may as well mount a cannon in the bed and call it a tank. Thatll add a lot of unnessary weight to your truck, you can use a thin gage stainless steel to achieve the same thing, and in the gap spray foam the snot out of it to insure no air or moisture will get into it. If you were to go with your idea and make it air tight, you still have air in the gap which will eventualy lead to a condensation build up and guess what... youll be in a bigger mess than what you have now, good luck
