The only way I know to get rid of rust is to cut it out and weld in new metal. You can slow some of the surface stuff by grinding or sanding it down to clean metal and repainting. Good luck with you new project.
Pesk,
I am a firm beliver in the sandblaster. It's the only thing that can work on the rain gutters around the doors. After you get bach to clean metal treat it with OSPHO or some metal prep that has phosphoric acid in it. If bondo is applied use duraglass. This green bondo is stronger and last longer. Always seal your bondo when not working on it. Don't drive around town with exposed bondo. It is porous and will transfer water to the metal.
