worn out shifter

i have a 95 f250 4x4 w/5.8 .w/ 198k mi. and an automatic trans. my problem is, when i shift into drive from park or reverse to drive the trans goes into 2nd gear instead of drive most of the time.(which is very annoying!) is the problem in the steering column? how hard is it too fix? i don't mind pulling the steering wheel if i know that is where the problem is, and i know what i'm getting into. i have already tried moving the adjustment underneath the cab, but it made no difference. i would appreciate any info on this problem . thank you!!

If you look at the bottom of the steering column you should see a "lever" with two torx head bolts, check that these bolts are tight.

that was it! it took a whole 3 min. to fix. they were about to fall out! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! ( i wish i would have asked 2 yrs ago!)
