I too had my egr and oil coolers replaced a few months ago. Less than 5K miles later I have the same symptoms. This time its the headgaskets. Not happy...I am going to fix it right this time.
*Edit to correct spelling.
The coolant smell on mine was from the degas bottle being over pressurised by the leaking headgasket. Is there any dried coolant near or on your degas bottle?
Maybe EGR cooler. Seems like once your problems get started with them, they dont last as long. Those dam oil coolers plug up so quick and trash everything. Mine was the head gaskets this time. I dropped the coin and went to the full BulletProof system with ARP studs. I dont want to get rid of the truck and I dont want to go through this again.
If the degas bottle cap obverpressures, Ford says it will "weaken" and relieve early. I include this type of situation in the category of a leak because it is not holding what it was intended to.
Head gasket issues after an EGR cooler failure is not uncommon.
