tranny problem? Need help quick

Alright so my baby is on the side of the road cause i was scared to drive any further. Now for what is happening when i started to go the tranny did not want to shift, once i let out of the throttle it would should up, but then same thing. wouldnt shift again till i let out. Coming to a stop there was this jerk and loud thud. she is very slow like there is something holding her back. it was to dark to check my fluid. Ill look in the morning. But any ideas on where i need to start if the fluid level is good?

Thanks all

Assuming you have a 2001 7.3L automatic with the original transmission, it's probably the mechanical diode. That's a type of one way clutch.

When the mechanical diode fails the symptom is that it won't shift 1-2 until very high RPM, or until you let off the go pedal. The fluid will probably look fine. The only way to fix this is to rebuild or replace the transmission.

Yes, it does. It confirms that it's the mechanical diode.

okay, so just some more info on the tranny problem. Still the same as last night. fluids were perfect, but now there is some grinding noise. Is that still going to be a mechanical diode and if so, is there a rebuild thread on our trannys somewhere. I really wanna tackle this myself along with a buddy that works on peterbuilts.

Thanks to all for helping me! i freaking love this site.

Don't drive it anymore until you find out what is coming apart. Read up on the 'diode' issue and if there is a way to overhaul the tranmission with out replacing the 'diode' section then do that. The 'diode' was only put in for a short time for that year and you should be able to get everything that you need to leave it out.

Do you know how to use the 'search this forum' key? it is on the main 7.3 page..... on the right side, upper, center. type in key words and threads will come up to help you.

Also, some more brothers will be along to help you out.

bottom line.... get rid of the diode parts...
