OK....the local wrecking yard has an E4OD that I could swap into my '94. They are asking $675 for it.
I also have a shot at a '97 F150, Supercab, 4x4, 4.6L with a blown head gasket. The current owner started to tear it apart, purchased another vehicle and lost interest in it. He's asking $700 for it.
I really love the '94....the engine runs great but under load it has a tick that I think is related to the trans and it has a hellva shudder. A bit of friction modifier made the shudder a *little* better, but not much.
Either way I'm taking over the garage for a couple weeks.
Wondering what your opinion is regarding which direction I should go.
675 is steep to me for a used trans unless its already rebuilt, I paid $250 for mine with 98k miles. Then again, idk what they're going for in your area. I'd plug your location into car-part.com and see if there are any cheaper around you though.
Other than that, I'd be leary about buying any project that someone got halfway through and gave up on. There's a good chance they either found something else wrong with it, or they just didn't know what they were doing. Plus, there's a few specialty tools you'd need to tear a 4.6 apart and put it back together the right way.
I've only been working as a mechanic for a couple years, but I'd prefer to swap a transmission in a '94 way before I'd want to touch a 4.6 motor.
