Small Stuff

I've been tinkering on my truck today & added a few small touches for fun & funtionality.

First, on the exterior. Nothing major, just a little chrome on the exhaust tips.

Next, onto the interior. A little more chrome by way of a fire extinguisher I had laying around for a few years in another dead project car.

And now under the hood. A little more chrome (I do like my chrome!), by way of an extra overflow reservoir I had rolling around the garage for a few years. I think it looks kind of nice next to the salvage yard fan shroud I installed yesterday. If you look closely at the shroud you'll see a repair I had to make with some JB weld. I'm hoping the reservoir will catch the coolant that's been spitting out of the radiator cap & causing those stains.

I hope you enjoy these little tidbits. I know I enjoy the ones you all have posted.

66 Your truck looks nice with the new parts. I hope the shroud works for you.

I want to say without malice that you were not listening to what your truck was telling you. It was puking coolant out of the area that it needed for expansion, and you being careful kept refilling it. These ol boys need about 3" down from the top for expansion to operate properly.

Many readers think their radiators need to be full, and think there is a problem when there isn't when it has relieved itself.

There is about 4 1/2 gallons of coolant in the system. If you can see it with the cap off, it is OK.

To add to what John said, Ford didn't offer a coolant recovery reservoir for F100/350's (or Bronco's) until 1980!

Thanks very much for the info, John! I didn't know, but I do now. I got the shroud off a '68 F250, Rgd.

Every thing looks great; I recommend getting a spray can of fusion paint plastic paint and once you masking tape the "Caution Fan" decal, paint the shroud and the repair would even blend in even more. Remove the shroud to paint; and then use high temp black on the radiator those expose to even make it pop even more.

The 'Caution Fan' decal has been reproduced. 1965/79 Passenger Cars used the same one as 1967/79 trucks.

One source that has it, is Dearborn Classics (dearbornclassics.com), located in Bend OR / Dearborn's Caution Fan decal part number: DF0031

Call 800-252-7427, order a free catalog. While Dearborn sells repro 1960/70's FoMoCo car parts, some are as the same as the trucks.

I may do just that. I still suspect a small leak somewhere in my radiator. My water level drops slowly over time until it gets below the baffles. Sometimes I need to add a gallon or more to the system. I'm sure overfilling contributes to this, but I'll see if the overflow reservoir addition yields any improvement before looking into radiator repair or cosmetic improvements.
