Not sure what forum this should be in but heres my predicament.
Im working on making some flip down back up lights for my '63 that when turned on would flip down and shine from under the bumper then when turned off would retract back to being hidden behind the bumper.
the problem im having is in finding a solenoid or actuator that would accomplish this. Does anyone here have any tips as to where i might find one?
Maybe install a spring to the light bracket to hold the light at retracted position. Then use a door lock actuator (LINK) to flip the light down when activated.
Door lock actuator is cheap but has short stroke (~3/4").

good idea, and i could probably make that stroke work. will a door lock actuator return like that?
The problem with a door lock actuator is there's no smooth action. It slams both ways. The other kind have nice slow, linear motion. Not sure it makes a difference for your application, but keep that in mind.
Door lock actuator works in both ways but required power at all time to hold at either position. This is the reason to use a spring to bring the light at retracted position and hold it. Door lock actuator is a fast action actuator. Hopefully the spring will smooth out the action.
