gentlemen, I am in the market (soon as money allows) to replace the starter on my 400-C6. It is the old rat trap type and on a bit of a strip down when the engine was reguilt it is seriously on the way out. The armature and brushes are both well worn and I believe it is the original from back in 72. I will be fitting headers as the OEM cast log units have been cracked/repaired before and are on their way out.
So between the worn starter (still starts ok for now!!) and the clearance I need to get the headers through I would like a smaller one so a gear reduction one would be the go.
My problem is I don't have a lot of money to play with (who does) so the obviously good ones like CVR at $300 plus are a toughy to swallow. They have them here in Australia as well as a local who makes a very similiar unit i.e. indexable, small and gear reduction as well as the price albeit a tiny bit cheaper. There seems to be a very limited market for the 400's in the cheaper starters. Bucketloads for the Chev's and Windsors but the clevelands and 429/460's are very few and far between. The wreckers over here are no good either. We just don't have the massive amount of F-trucks over here to rob an applicable starter off and I have been told they just don't have them.
I have been looking on evil bay and there is an outfit called Alterstart (Texas?) that do a cheaper alternative approx $130US. for around $40 to get it here to Aussie, a $180 starter would be not to bad. Warranty would be problematic so thats the reason for this post. Alterstart any good, or are there any other alternatives? Cheers.
No worries had a crack at the CP just then. Still a noob at this stuff.
Thanks for the profile stuff.
I see you have a Facebook button but it doesn't work. Mine didn't at first, either, had to get into the Facebook preferences and set up an externally-available URL, then plug that into the FTE thing.
