Red face tranny help!!

Tranny started acting up just 3 days ago, now it won't go. Started out taking longer than normal to shift from 1st to 2nd. Day 2 started out ok but on the drive home I had to start letting off the accelerator for it to shift from 1st to 2nd. Today, again started out ok but on the way home (hot-hot weather here in H town) the trans temp got up to near 250 deg. and was barely getting the truck rolling from a dead stop. Luckly... I made it to my driveway, drained the fluid, pulled the pan and all I found was about a teaspoon worth of fine metallic sludge.
Any suggestions as to what I should replace other than the obvious fliter & fluid?

Did the fluid smell or look burnt? When was the last time it was changed?

No burnt look just metallic swirls and it smelled just like crayons. I'm ashamed to say but it's been about 40k miles since last change. I rarely pull anything other than an occasional car.

Oh, is that all? What were you expecting to find? Sorry, it just sounds funny the way you said it.

Forget about the fluid and filter. Your clutches started slipping three days ago and now your transmission has burned up. Start saving for a rebuild.

Thanks Plankton.... I was afraid that might be it.
On hindsight, as soon as I noticed the slipping was there anything that I could have done at that point to prevent or at least stall the inevitable?

I hate to say it but I believe Kent is correct, it is not likely that the new fluid will change a whole lot. Definitely go with a BTS Brians Truck Shop or a John Woods Riffraff Diesel: John Wood Towmaster Trans or John Wood Automotive - Home depending on your location. That is if you intend on keeping the truck...if not cheap rebuild and sell.

You could have parked the truck, that's about it. Once they start slipping, death is inevitable and the only fix is a rebuild.

I don't think so if the fuild was full. I never had a problem till one day waiting for my daughter I backed out of the space and Know forward gears. Kep playing and it want. One week later same thing. Got it home in first and that was it. Put in a JW trans with 6.0L trans cooler and new radiator to run it thur the radiator, mines an e99 didn't have that and all is well. Plus it runs really cool now. I'm in CA and go thur the desert alot towing and driving. So thats a big plus. If you don't want to spend the big dollars then I would go Fords HD trans with 3 year unlimited miles but change the cooler. It would have to be the HD model. Chet
