Gritty tranny fluid

I checked the fluid yesterday, it looks and smells fine but has a little grit to it. I am thinking it is a little normal but my husband is flipping out swearing we are going to need a new tranny soon.

The fluid is a little over a year old and has about 20K on it. It is shifting fine but did have a little stumble the other night when I tried to race my step son in his little girly car. I was doing about 25 waiting for him to catch up and then stomped on it, it did a little double shift but that's the only thing I have noticed in the past 2 years.

Should I just change the fluid or start pricing out new tranny's?

Change it, see what else comes out of the pan. I don't know why you would have had grit on the stick. Metal should settle out in the pan.

I agree with Barry, debris should be in the pan, hope there's not alot of it in there. Worst case senario, JW or BTS, good luck Cris..

Is the debris metal? Can you check the grit with a magnet?

Mine didn't have debris after 30K when Brian changed it for me. IIRC, I asked Cale if he exepected crud in it since it was 30K and the trans was rebuilt. I was expecting some crud because it was new. He said "Bet you it comes out clean" and it did. Good thing I didn't bet.

Good idea checking it with a magnet.

If the grit is not metal, it is likely clutch material, and your hubby's fears may have some merit.

Good luck Cris. That does not seem normal to me either.

Reading this, I am wondering if your hubby put the grit there so he could get a new trans.

BTW, a BTS will run you $4100 plus shipping. Last trans you will pay for they told me. I have been trying to beat on mine and break it but that hasn't worked yet.

Me too but I kinda doubt it. Probably clutch material in the pan and if you can pick up that in the dipstick, you probably will find more in the pan.

Hey, Cris. I would pull the pan and have a good look at the filter. Have a new filter ready to go in. Good luck.

And don't freak out when you see a bunch of fuzzy stuff around the magnet. That part's normal. I like Mike's method of draining the old fluid through a coffee filter to see what kind of crud is in there.

Don't forget to take some pictures for us.
