I am thinking about buying a 83 with a 6.9 2wd. Unfortuantly it is a stick. So I want to convert to a C6
I am looking for a list beyond what I have thought about to make a proper conversion - IE same as the factory would do it. I can patch the shift hole in the floor so ia not worried abot that.
1) A proper diesel C6 / TQ
2) Flexplate
3) Rear Mount
4) Driveshaft
5) Steering colume
6) Shift quardrant for the cluster
I have a question as to how the vacume modulator works with the diesel? Is it a valve on the IP?
Or should I look for a complete donor truck? If I find a gas truck - what is the difference between the gas C6 / TQ and the diesel C6 / TQ?
I am also assuming that the 460 and the diesel share the same C6 case casting?
Gas and diesels do NOT share the same bell housing, so you'll have to find a diesel tranny. With a C6, yes, there is a piece that mounts to the IP, you'll also have to tap into the vacuum lines for it.
You'll need a column and instrument panel (IIRC the shift indicator is in the dash in that model?) for the auto as well, ideally a diesel dash so that the gauges etc match up.
If you can find a parts truck, it's always handy to have everything you need right there at your disposal.
how much is the truck? cus you could probably just buy an auto truck for the same or less $ anyway you know?
she must be real clean to consider the swap?
since your swapping, why stay with old school? drop the overdrive trans (E40D) in there and get some economy?
Except dropping an E4OD into an '83 is going to be a trick electrically, as there won't be a tach sensor, tach, or quite possibly any of the other wiring that would be required, as well as a TCM either.
It sounds like no matter how nice this truck is from a body perspective, I should keep looking. It seems that HD standard cabs are hard to find around here, most are super cabs, and I am just not willing to give up the capacity nor turning radius as this is going to have a dump bed insert installed.
You are going to need a different drive shaft but the auto is longer so you can shorten yours, but the crossmember may nee to be moved. IIRC you need the flywheel from an auto. These 6.9's have a two piece setup, heavy flywheel with a flexplate that bolts to it. To control the modulator you need a VRV vacuum regulator valve bolts to the left side of the ip. And as was already stated colum, shift linkage, and such.
