Cigar Lighter

My lighter isn't working so after checking the fuse, I removed it & took a look at it. I cleaned up the contact points inside the well & at the center of the element. The wire that fits onto the center stud at the back of the well looks good & is making contact.

The only other wire I found was a black one that goes into an external housing that clips onto the side sleeve which screws onto the well & holds it to the dash. I was expecting it to be a ground wire, but inside that external housing I was surprised to find a light bulb, fully shrouded by the housing. The bulb looked fine, the filiments were intact as far as I could see. What the heck is that bulb for? If the wire or housing for it doesn't act as a ground, does the sleeve & well against the dash ground it? The DC replacement units I looked at have a second tab on the back for a ground wire, but I don't have any corresponding wire on my harness to attach it to.

I'm know I'm electrically challenged, but I would like to get everything on my truck in proper working order. Any help would be much appreciated.

Some times the heating elliment burns out and you have to replace the whole unit as they don't sell just the elliment? try putting in a aftermarket one to see if it works and you'll know if housing is good or not? you could also pick one up from a pic and pull for cheap, PS, I have a later model lighter in my 65, but will just keep it because a NOS is anywhere from 30 to fifty dollars on Ebay....I have a restomod anyway!

I agree with Huck. Troubleshooting is all about isolating the problem. For a quick test get the element out of another vehicle that you know works and try it in your truck. If it doesn't work there, get a test light or volt/ohm meter to check for current, first the power wire that pushes on the stud on the back of the socket. Make sure you have a good ground - bare metal to bare metal. The socket gets its ground from contact with the back of the metal dash. So check for power first at the wire, then inside the socket. If the bottom of the socket is hot, then the problem should be the element. NPD's current catalog on page 15 has both elements and sockets available separately for $8.25 and $5.00. Good luck!

You guys were dead on! I swapped another element in & it worked fine so mine is bad. I also figured out that the bulb is wired into the dash lights so you don't wreck trying to find the hole to replace the element in the dark after using it.

The element was available by itself. As original, the **** was only sold as an assembly with the element (C1TZ-15052-A).

1961/66 as original: C1TZ-15054-A .. Lighter Element-includes bezel that has LIGHTER marked on it. The bezel is swagged onto the element, not replaceable.

1973/79: D3TZ-15054-A replaced C1TZ-15054-A (and 1967/72 C7TZ-15054-A). This element has a slightly different bezel, but is also marked LIGHTER.

The C1TZ-15054-A element, while obsolete, can be found NOS (I'll list sources if interested). The D3TZ-15054-A element is available from Dennis Carpenter.

NOTE: The lighter fuse (FEW-14429-A) threads onto the back of the lighter's socket. It's barrel shaped, has a male and female thread.

The socket has a male thread, the female end of the fuse threads onto it, the wire is pushed onto the fuses male end.
