After 20 years, I thought it was time I wired up the new aftermarket "cigarette" lighter on my 12V 51f1..for cel phone. I rewired my truck with OEM type wiring years ago, just left the cigarette lighter wire dangle. When I now go to connecting the female red wire to the lighter's male bayonet, I get sparks. Maybe the aftermarket "lighters" assume they'll be mounted in a plastic dash, rather than the 51's OEM hole in metal dash? What am I doing wrong? Gene in Sacramento
I'd suspect the male terminal is a rivet thru a hole in the shell, with a phenolic washer to insulate it. I'd bet the phenolic isn't working. Check with an ohmmeter.
Yes, I have negative ground system. Your posts have helped me. The problem with my lighter hook up has been located between my ears. I should be hooking the hot wire to the center screw of the lighter, and instead I was trying to hook it to the outer housing, which conveniently has a male spade, probably put there for grounding purposes. Duhh. Thanks all, for kickstarting my brain. Gene in Sac'to.
FYI: You can now buy housings without elements with a rubber cap if you are just using it as a power source. I have 4 I plan on putting in Gracie. You can never have too much power! huuuh huuuh huuug!
