ok so im looking at a 20 foot 15K goodeneck equipment trailer and with any luck ill be the new owner of it on monday. i already have a gooseneck hitch in my 88, what im looking for is recomendations for my dads 2010 F 250. were looking for a good hitch for his truck, ive looked ar B&W and a few others. since its going in a new truck, he is willing to spend the money on a nice hitch ( and since im not buying him a hitch why not..) so what do yall recomend?
If you dont get a good answer here, check down in the towing section. Most of those guys are pulling 5th wheels but lots of knowledge over there. There was a thread recently about goosekneck setups and there was one with a flip over ball and you had a handle in the wheel well to release the ball. That seems like the best setup I've seen but I dont know who makes it.
Theyre all about the same from what ive found. If you know of a trailer building outfit or trailer parts shop they should have them on display and can build you one up. I think my grandparents paid $580 for theirs installed in the 2011. Really nice lookin hitch, under the bed floor with flip hitch. Real nice powdercoat job on it too.
The only thing I would say is stay away from hitches with the pop up ***** (turn over ones are fine), once you get a little sand in there they are a PITA to operate.
I installed a b@W in my 88. When I got the pickup it had a 5th wheel ball in it, but it had a piece of steel the whole width of the bed that was raised about 3 inches. terrible unhandy for hauling anything in the bed. It took me longer to remove the old one than to install the b@w. I Love being able to remove the ball and have a flat bed. The install was a breeze for me, you don't have to remove the bed. it took a short 2 hours. I have found that it is best for me to remove the ball and keep it in the cab. I then put a rag in the hole. Otherwise i get sand in it and it becomes difficult to turn over. You may not hove that issue depending on your use of the truck
well i think you guys have sold me on the b&w. now to get the ol man to buy one..lol ive looked at them before and thought they looked like a good simple set up. thought about putting one in my 88,
X2,3,4 on the B&W I had one on my 89 250 and added one to the 99 F350, it does require one small cut in the underbody and careful application of a 4 inch hole saw.
I had a new body fitted to my 89 sometime back and called B&W, they gave me the measure distance from end of bed to center of hitch in order to drill the hole in the new bed to fit the existing hitch and they were spot on.
When you need to pick up a load of drywall you'll love the B&W. Don't leave the insert in over the winter if you're living in a salt use area. If it does become frozen, it only takes a half hour to pull the hitch out from under the truck.
