wet clutch

Hey guys..... Just installed my T500 hpop from Terminator engineering, and rebuilt and cleaned my stock fuel bowl as per guzzles great illustrated instructions! What caused me to go with the T500 is that my rear hpop plug blew out taking the threads with it. Oil, as you can imagine, was everywhere! While I was waiting the arrival of my new pump I throughly cleaned the engine and the underneath several times to try to avoid the residual dripping, and to be able to see any leaks after I built a fire in her. My problem is this, I am not able to feel any difference with the T500 due to the fact that my clutch is slipping , which, I hope, is because its wet with oil. Am I on the right track? The clutch was fine before the plug blew. Secondly, does anyone know how long will it take for the oil to finally burn off? Is there something else that can be done to speed the process? Thanks Bill

Sounds like a bad HPOP... why don't you send it to me so I can check it for you....

Seriously tho... If you have the knowledge to, I would remove and clean it with some brake cleaner and/or degreaser. But thats me.I would hate to ruin a clutch due to oil on it.

Ha Ha Ha I bet Joey would blow a gasket if he knew you said that !!!! So..your saying drop the tranny and clean it , right? Would almost consider a new clutch if I am gonna do that... ( or at least have it there in case it looks bad). Current clutch has about 55,000 on it. But I guess miles dont really have anything to do with it, its how its used right?

Well, I'd be worried about it ruining the clutch material... I know if you get it on brake pads it can screw them up pretty bad. (I had oil leak onto my pads on my motorcycle from the fork.) took a HD cleaning to get them to work again. Scary when you go to stop and have only 10-15% of your braking power!

Just drive it. After it warms up a bit, help it slip every now and then to burn off the oil. When I had a fuel line come apart and soaked my clutch with diesel the slipping slowly got better and was gone in 3 days.

Just try and feather it out of the slipping so the disc doesn't grab too hard and create a rough spot. (if it does that, you've got another 3 days of trying to slip the clutch on purpose to wear down the rough spot)

Well I am kinda worried about damaging the clutch, and I dont want to do that. but that was my first thought.... to just let it slip a little at a time ,and I ve been doing that. Good thing is I dont smell clutch..... It does seem to be getting a little better. Most slipping is now in higher gears.... Thanks for the reassurance, Bill

Does the AT guys, have this problem as well, or just us MT? So, how do we go about then, cleaningg the valley. Believed i had this issue before with an oil leak, then cleaned it up, but noticed something weird with the clutch, i let it alone, and now its been 15k miles ago

the issue is that the drain in the rear of the block allows the engine oil in the valley to contaminate the clutch

jason (skyskijason) has a great answer where he put some soft copper pipe around the inside outer edge of the bellhousing to route the oil past the bottom of the bellhousing

even a little oil dripping at 60 mph will blow back up onto the clutch

still learning

i now dont have an, oil in valley, issue anymore, but for those of them that do, why not put a rubber plug into the valley hole? I know, fix the leak, but for the scenerio of if anything happens, atleast its plugged and wont effect it?

I'm thinking that a (potential) pool of diesel fuel sloshing around under a 1000*+ turbo charger plus electrical components could be a problem.

well I drove it quite a bit last night , and I know in an earlier post I said it seemed to be improving, (maybe wishful thinking),but it really isnt improving! I guess it will take more time.... Although any amount of oil will contaminate the clutch ,I imagine the amount of oil that blew out when my plug blew, will take quite a bit longer than a slow leak.Dont really want to have to drop that mammoth of a tranny, but i guess worse things have had to be done......
