Truck in the signature has a very periodic problem. It has only done this 4 times total. The first two times were in one day last year around November, and the second two times were in one day last Wednesday. What it does is while driving down the freeway at a constant speed a real fast diesel clack sound will be heard (kind of like doing a raspberry with your tongue) for a second and the check engine light will come on. After a half of a mile or so of driving, the CEL will go out and it does not store a code. It has only done this those 4 times and no more. I can't replicate it on demand. I called a diesel shop and they told me that it was likely either the ECM or the fuel injector controller. He also said that as it does it so very randomly that it could just be a ground issue. Does this sound accurate, and if so, where are the grounds I need to check?
If you are getting a CEL you have a code stored, in case you didn't know most big box "free" code readers will not pull the PSD specific codes. Sounds like possibly a UVCH issue or chafing on the 42 pin connector going over the driver's side valve cover.
UVCH is Under valve cover wiring harness, the wiring going to the injectors, I find it hard to believe if you had a CEL no matter what it should store a code, search 50 cent mod for UVCH pics and info. The 42 pin connector is the large square connector above the driver's side valve cover, the wire loom is know to rub on the valve cover.
If you really wanted to check grounds, there are 2 low on the motor front, and one on the passenger's side rear, that goes to the body around A/C box.
How long after the light came on did the dealer check it out? If the light came on, there was a code set, even if it was just a KAM error. Was it no codes, or no important codes?
I don't think it's your UVCH, but there's one under each valve cover. You'll need to remove the CAC tubes, the dipstick tube bracket and disconnect the 42 pin connector to remove them.
They just told me that there were no codes. I took it to the dealer maybe 45 minutes after it happened. I watched a YouTube video showing one of the UVCH disconnected to where the truck was only running on four cylinders, and mine doesn't run rough or black smoke. It will only lightly smoke even under heavy acceleration, never thick clouds like that was showing due to un-burnt fuel. I will check the 42-pin connector on the top for chafing, but like I said, it is so random and rare for it to happen.
