Hey Guys and gals. I have a 99 ranger ext cab with 3.0 auto. I have been noticing a thump noise when I drive it. The noise almost always presents itself as the truck is slowing to stop. Never noticed it thumping when accelerating.
I have seen the posts about the slip joint driveshaft issue. I looked and believe I have a full size driveshaft not the two piece. I tried pulling the area where the u-joint is and it seems solid.
Tranny mount???
Motor mounts??? How can you tell if a MM is bad. If I rev the engine with the hood up I do not see any excessive twisting of the motor....
Got any ideas? or other things to look at? I think this weekend I am going to jack the back of the truck up and pull the drums and clean the rear brakes check the wheel cylinders and rear seals. Also pop diff cover and drain and refill. Anything I shjould check out while back there?
Revving the engine may not be enough to detect a broken MM. You may have to put it in gear with the brake on and gently step on the gas to see if the motor lifts (be safe!). You may need to try it in both R and D to detect an issue. It could be that when the tranny goes into a lower gear and the RPMs rise that the engine lifts momentarily an then comes back to rest on a broken MM. Used to happen to me in my 80 Buick Skyhawk (broke MMs left and right).
i had a grid thump to and it turn out the left front wheel bearing went out and there not cheep and like the other said one person in the truck hold down the breaks and put in drive hit the gas while you watch the motor the do it in revers if the motor lifts up and drops fast the mount is bad but easy fix,
