Help with I-6 engine I.D.

One of my neighbors has what he thinks is an old Ford 300 I-6 sitting in his garage for sale. It was supposedly a rebuilt engine that never got installed and just sat in the barn under a tarp. He thinks it is for a Big truck.

It doesn't look like a 300 to me at all. The oil filter (canister type) is on the right side (opposite to any 300 I-6 I have seen). It does have a gear driven timing. The casting number C2TE-6015-A. Anybody got an idea?

Thank you.

The C2 casting number you quote is from 1962. I'm not sure if the same casting number might have used in subsequent years but I think probably not. I have been wrong before (lots). I just looked up the history of the Ford 300 c.i. engine online and it said the engine wasn't introduced until 1964. You already didn't think it was a 300 - here's another reason.

The easiest way to tell the difference between a 223/262 and a 240/300 is the location of the intake & exhaust manifolds. 223/262 have them on the left side of the engine, and the 240/300 have them on the right side. (As seen from the drivers seat.)

Thanks, that got me going in the right direction.

It appears to be a 262 truck engine. I have no need of one but if someone else does, it is here in Sedro-Woolley, Washington. Send me a PM and I will be happy to act as a go-between.

My 62 Uni has a 262 with a hole in the number one piston. How much is he asking? Does it still turn over? Hopefully it was stored properly.

240 & 300 I-6's introduced in 1965 (1965 model year began September 1964).

223 = 1954/64 / 262 = 1961/64.

1954/59 223: The valve cover attaches to the head with two studs that poke thru the cover.

1960/64 223: The valve cover is retained to the head with 8 bolts.

Thanks Bill and glad to see you back on-line. I hope you enjoyed our little town and your drive over the mountains.

Keith, you were spot on about the wildlife turnouts. The first one we came to had a herd of elk grazing in a meadow.
