Just got a call, my son is being flat-bedded home in our truck. Apparently a u-joint failed going down the highway, and the rear-most part of our two-piece rear drive shaft is lost.
I remember having to "index mark" the shafts when removing them so they can be re-installed in proper position. But we have to buy a new one. How do I orientate it to the front half of the rear driveshaft assembly that is still on the truck?
Well, you aren't going to find a drive shaft at any auto parts store. I'd even be surprised if a Ford dealership had one in stock, and you would pay an arm and a leg for it anyway.
Your best bet is to check junkyards. You can go to www.car-part.com to check for junkyards that have it in stock.
Sorry for the not so bright questions. Its Sunday night .. no part stores are open ... I badly need this truck .... and I'm a little panicy. Lol.
Jim
Maybe a dumb suggestion (and I'll count on all the other guys to correct me), but can't you put it in 4-hi, and drive like a front wheel drive? Make sure your front drive shaft/axle u-joints are in good shape, but I'd think you can drive like that indefinitely.

You can, but not recommended for daily driving. A friend of mine did this to get his truck to the mechanic. I would check local machine shops or a place that specializes in drive shafts to. Problem with jy drive shafts is most get bent or damaged because of how the move the vehicles around with equipment.
You can drop the rear and drive it on the front axel with no problem! It's a little hard on hubs but itl do no damage to the drivetrane for a end run until you get a new rear driveline!
You should be able to get the part from the center u joint to the rear one as one assembly. Not sure on how to line everything up though but if you get one from a driveline shop they can tell you the right way.
As for the front wheel drive, yes, you can do that. Both of my brothers have done this after blowing rears out 4 wheeling. One of the 7.3 guys with an Ex pulled his 10k camper home after grenading the spider gears. He said it had some torque steer but drove like nothing was wrong. You won't get any of the 4x4 wheel hop either so its actually easier on the hubs then normal 4x4 on pavement.
