Starter rarely wants to engage! Just clinks off the ring gear and spins up!
Trruck was originaly a vin code Y 300 six truck. Someone threw the windsor in.
I replaced the flexplate on the truck for a guy at work and installed a new starter drive gear as he had "shimmed it" by shoving a 3/8 washer on the top bolt hole cause his ring gear to disolve. He had put a new starter on it himself as it was noisy when he bought the truck. The funky thing in all of this is the top section of the bellhousing has been welded back together. As it had been broke in 5 pieces. The lowest two bolt holes and the starter position are still unbroke, so one could assume that it is lined up correctly. Otherwise everything seems normal.
Other than a bad or incorect starter what the heck? The Kid dont have a ton of money and needs a vehicle.

THe bellhousing is welded back together? No wonder why its eating up starters and flexplates. My friend who had a 82 F150 cracked his bellhousing(not as bad as yours) and had it TIG back together, he had nothing but problems after eating up starters and flexplates.
With a C6 tranny bellhousing holding the starter in place, its got to be exact. With 5 pieces welded back together the bellhousing will not be aligned properly even though the lower part was not cracked.
Hate to say but you probly will need another tranny to resolve this issue.

You can also try to see if you have the right number of teeth on your starter for your flywheel. For some reason, after my 351 was rebuilt by a friend of the family, parts store starters do not match (toothwise) for my application. The family friend must have changed flywheels and now normal starters won"t line up.
Before the final desision is made, verify the starter for a automatic tranny. I know from experiance a automatic and manual tranny needs the proper starter.
Also check the engine and tranny mounts, being bad they will cause a bellhousing to crack as my friend found out the hard way. Bad thing was.....he was TOO CHEAP to replace them and caused much more $$$ in the long run.
The snout of the starters are diffrent, one's longer than the other. I think when I put a automatic starter in my 84 F250, it fired up but would not disengage the starter bendex as it was longer than the manual tranny starter.
Checked today on the starter. It is the correct one. Wear pattern on the teeth show that the rear of the tranny is hanging low due to the cracked bell. We are going to attempt to shim the tranny up a bit and if not write it off as a loss as the cost of aa good used tranny is about the same as the trucks value.
Why not just buy a used bellhousing? Probably less than a rebuilt starter and you can use one off a 2wd or 4wd just as easy. If you have a pull-n-save or similar yard around you could have the bellhousing for $25.
