will soon be time for the 1st oil change and i'm trying to decide whether to do it myself or go to the dealer. i typically do all vehicle maintenance myself so that i know 1st hand what has been done. i've done a little bit of research and in what i've found i will need 13 qts of oil and a Motorcraft FL-2051 filter which i have not been able to find anywhere locally such as autozone or walmart. walmart does carry Motorcraft oil that is CJ-4 rated and 15W-40 weight. it's ~ $16/ per 5qt container and will require 3 containers. but i would have some left over. the filter i can only find online or probably at the local dealer for between $12 and $22. i got a coupon from the dealer that sold me the truck for an $89.95 oil change + taxes, disposal fees and whatever else they can charge me i'm sure. my question is should i change it myself, and if so what oil and filter should i get or should i take it to the dealer?
You should be able to get the oil filter from your Ford dealer parts counter. I am in the Chicago area and Walmart does stock this filter on the shelf here.
As far as what oil to get is a source of great debate. Get a good quality oil that meets or exceeds the rating of this engine. I personally like a full synthetic.
Whether you should change it yourself or take it to the dealer is a personal choice. I personally like to change mine for a variety of different reasons, even if I had a free coupon. Some people are more comfortable with the dealer doing it. There is no right or wrong answer here.
It cost me $95 for a oil change the other day at my dealer. 14 quarts of oil and a filter. The best thing about it, they get to 'deal' with the old oil. A bargain in my book.

A bargain?
Costs less than $60 for semi-syn 10w30 Rotella and Motorcraft filter. Oil disposal is FREE at any wal-mart or auto parts store.
$35 + tax is a bargain to do something that would cost you nothing on your next grocery or parts run?
My dealer changes mine for $9.95 for life, so it is not even an issue for me.
that's a great deal....where do we find these dealers and how do you swing those kinds of deals??...wish there was some kind of locator that would allow us to find dealers that provide these services for good prices...at $9.95 it would be a no brainer for me to take it and have it done at the dealer...but it seems most dealers charge about 10x that or between $90 and $100...which makes me lean toward doing it myself...oil disposal is not that big of a deal and i can get 15 qts for about $45...i'm sure my local small town dealer will charge me full retail for a filter though or ~$22 + tax...so when all is said and done i would have $70 cost + my time or take to the dealer and pay ~$95 + the wait, but they deal with disposal and there would be no warranty issues......hmmmmmmmm
If you keep detailed records of maintenance (keep receipts and take note of what was replaced when) the dealer can't void your warranty because of a lack of proper maintenance. Now, if you DON'T replace/refresh something that should have been or you don't have a record of doing it, that might be an issue. As long as you have proper documentation you should be good.
I have a quick document that I print and fill out when I change the oil and staple the receipts to it then file it away.
I document oil level before/after, mileage and engine hours.
I've read Ford will most likely ignore any 3rd party oil tests but I also staple the blackstone report to that oil change paperwork.
Lastly, I submit the information to my Ford Owners account.
This way the dealer can see that I've been doing maintenance on my truck.
Ford won't be able to argue.

i've been looking for something online that's free that allows me to log the maintenance....we have that with our tahoe via onstar....i assume the ford owners acct would let you do this? if so do you have a link to it?

If you've had your truck at a dealer, the dealer notes should eventually appear and you can create self service notes.
Took mine to the dealer on Friday for an LOF and Tire Rotation. Cost me $75 due to a technicality, but I'll take it. The guy that wrote up the order misquoted the cost, but they honored their deal. I don't think I'll get away so easy next time.
the chart in this link tells how much oil and what oil depending on what you use the truck for. 6.7L Power Stroke Specs
I just got a job a ford dealer and i do oil changes. not trying to scare you guys away but i would change my own oil. i do anyways. we pretty much pull the drain plug, pull the filter, order the filter, go get it, put filter on, then put drain plug in while oil is still dripping from drain. i personally like to let my oil drain until nothing is dripping out of oil pan.
Like i said, not trying to scare you guys away from the dealer but just putting itout there. everything is about speed at a dealership.
