The fuel gauge on my 04 F250 5.4 has died a second time. The first time the Dealer fix the problem because it was under warranty. This time around I have to fix it myself. It seems the fuel sending is the problem. The gauge dies and the low fuel light comes on, a short time later the check engine light comes on. How do I go about replacing the sending unit?
Thanks Desert 4X4
First get the code checked. Odds are its a bad ground but if it is the sending unit. Empty the tank as much as possible then disconnect the battery, lower the tank (with a floor jack) enough to get your arm above it and unplug all the connectors, lower the tank the rest of the way. You will need a sharpie, brass punch and a hammer. with the sharpie draw a line where the sending unit is clocked. Take the punch and hammer and tap the retaining ring counter clockwise and pull the sending unit out. Put the new unit in as the same position as the old on and do everything else in reverse order.
Its a fairly easy job will take you maybe an hour. If your not very mechanically inclined while your at the parts store getting the sending unit pick up a service manual it will have step by step instructions with pictures
Fixed the sending unit. There is one wire coming off the sending unit that broke right at the solder joint. I could of resolder the wire but, I had a new sending unit ready. I can use the old one as a spare.
Does anyone know the size of the rubber gas line coming off the gas tank. The line is at the front and rear of the tank and appear to go to the vapor canister.
