Power Steering Conversion - Help

Ok, I''ve tried searching for this answer to my question, but to no avail.....

If I take the steering column, pump, steering box, etc. from a 1978-79 F-150 4x4 will I be able to swap it into my 1975 f-100 4x4 without too much difficulty?

Any tips, answers or suggestions would be appreciated.

By the way I currently have the power assist steering.

360 FE with a C6 if that helps.

Yes it will work did the same conversion to my 75 f-100 from a 79 f-150. You need everything though tie rod ends, drag link, steering knuckles the whole works. Great thing about it your also getting front disc brakes as well.

Very doable.. and here's what ya do (assuming it does not involve a disc-equipped axle swap):

First, a few notes:

1. I sleeved my frame instead of simply drilling holes for the mounting bolts.
2. You can source the pressure fittings new from Jegs or Summit but I had no clue on what to get so I brought both pressure hoses to a hydraulic shop and got a custom line fabbed up.
3. The 78-79 T-style drag link and tie rod is waaay better then the Y-style found in 76-77.
4. After removing the tie rod from the donor, loosely reinstall the tie rod and measure how much "stick-out" the tie rod shank is exposed and keep a record of that measurement. You'll likely need to ream your D44s steering arm holes because the later tie rod has a thicker shank. I thought they were all the same but alas, they were not.
5. The driver's inner fender will require a little bit of trimming to replicate the later steering box location.
6. If yer horn doesn't work after the retrofit, install jumper wires across the vibration isolator and the rag joint.

Here is the list and my costs (and less expensive if you can beg or borrow a reamer):

I don't think you need the column on a 4x4 swap because they use that long colapsable shaft between the box and and bottom of column. 2wd are behind the front susp. so as soon as the column ends it couples to the box. Differences in the length of manual and power boxes is the reason for manual and power columns to be different length.

sleeving the frame sounds a lot better than drilling holes thats what I did to mount my gearbox. Hey HIO Silver any chance you could post up a pic of your gearbox?

Here ya go... this is an early test fit. The two rear holes are sleeved. The front mount is back-bolted because it ended up inside the forward crossmember.

I recently coached FTE member "ungerp" through the same process and his works like a charm too.

Thanks for the suggestions.

How did you go about sleeving the frame for the steering box?

Theres a donor truck at the local junk yard and now that I know it's doable I'm heading down this weekend to scavenge the parts.

Sweet!

Make a template of the steering box mounting holes and locate on frame
Centerpunch the holes
Drilled 1/2-inch holes for the rear bolts with a looooong bit so you can go through the entire boxed section. Keep it level and square.
Open up the holes with a step drill enough so the pipes can be inserted.
Insert 1/2-inch I.D. pipes and mark for length. Cut square! Ensure the outboard ends of the pipe stand proud of the frame surface because (at least mine), the frame is slightly contoured to be thinner the closer ya get to the track bar bracket. Apply a straight edge along the frame to determine how much 'stick-out' ya need so the box mounts flat. You do not want to torque it down and break off an ear.
Weld the pipes in place both outboard and inboard. You need a 360-degree weld.. can't rely on tack welds.

Print out the shopping list I posted so ya don't forget anything.
